Bored, with a Camera: Episode 1.
Today’s location: Columbus Museum of Art.
The “Bored, with a Camera” series consists of photos I take when I’m trying to find interesting compositions anywhere I happen to be, often with nothing else to do. Think of it as camera practice (or, a boring life). Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.
Best co-pilot ever.
Every road trip needs someone sleeping in the passenger seat.
Pentax Astrotracer
One of the most unique features of recent Pentax cameras is Astrotracer. Using the movable imaging sensor in combination with GPS, it allows you to take night sky exposures of up to five minutes using nothing more than a standard tripod and get images with NO star trails. It sounds great in theory…
Visiting the Maya.
Most of our vacation in Cancun was spent hanging out at the resort. It was a beautiful setting and we had an awesome room (probably the best I’ve ever had), but the highlight of the week for me was a side-trip to the ancient Mayan city of Cobo. I can enjoy resort life for a couple of days, but after that I start feeling the need to get out and find someplace remote, or a hill to climb, or to just get away from people…

The Life of a Photograph.
The Life of a Photograph: by Sam Abell.
I came across this book while browsing in The Book Loft a few months ago. Even though I’ve reviewed a couple other books so far, this book is the first photography book I purchased there, and it started my regular visits to the store as a source of inspiration…
Driving a Train.
I recently visited the Midwest Railway Preservation Society in Cleveland for a class on how to drive a 55-ton diesel locomotive. Here are some shots from that trip…
New York City II (Day 4).
After a lifetime of hearing about New York’s Central Park, from countless movie scenes, book references, and jokes from late night TV monologues, I was finally about to experience it. It was a warm, sunny day, but spring had not yet sprung. The trees and other plant life were still in winter form.
New York City II (Day 3).
Even though I still have a lot to learn about this city, at least I’m much better at understanding the subway system. I’m a big fan of cities in which you can easily get around without a car. Never having to worry about parking is awesome. And wandering aimlessly is what I do best…
New York City II (Day 2).
It was cold. It was rainy. My legs hurt. My allergies were bad. My stomach was sketchy. I didn’t really feel like sightseeing or taking pictures, but I knew I only had three days in New York so I needed to get out and start walking instead of spending the entire morning in the hotel room…
New York City II (Day 1)
As a scatterbrained photographer, walking around this town can sometimes feel like sensory overload. It’s as if my brain realizes with every passing second there’s a great photo taunting me from different directions.
CMoA
Weekend in Atlanta.
Here are the driving/walking directions to find anything in Atlanta:
Follow Peachtree Street until it intersects Peachtree Street NW, then turn right and stay on Peachtree Street NW until it mysteriously becomes Peachtree Street SW, then turn south onto Peachtree Boulevard, staying on it until the junction with Peachtree Circle. Stay in the right lane until you reach what you think is your destination at the intersection of Peachtree Street NE, Peachtree Avenue B12, and Peachtree Lane. Then, realizing you (and your phone) have no clue where you are, ask someone who doesn’t look like tourist which direction to go.
